I’m having a run of depressed heroes. (Not to mention a run of runaway wives in my category romance reading.) My First Look at Blue-Eyed Stranger by Alex Beecroft is up at Heroes and Heartbreakers.
For those not familiar with the site, a “First Look” isn’t a traditional review/critique. The focus is on what the reader loved most about the book, whatever that may be. For me, I loved the true geekiness of these devoted history buffs.
See, this is what I love about m/m. It does ordinary people in non-extraordinary situations and intersectionality (disability, race) so much better than het. If only RIptide’s prices were more like Samhain’s. The former is why Sunita’s comments on her blog about how much she dislikes broken heroes in m/m stung so much, especially after she confirmed that yes, she was criticizing the genre for it, not just expressing her own taste/opinion.
That sounds like a great book but the price is daunting.
I haven’t read much romance with true depression (just the occasional blah’s) but this sounds quite well done.
It is pricey, though you can trust the quality with this pub, which is sadly not true for all m/m. Do you have Overdrive? Or are you one of the buy-only people? 🙂
I hate to ask, what is Overdrive?
It’s one of the more common library ebook services, and they do buy Riptide books.
It does sound really good, but even without the price barrier, I find that I cannot read about depression without it having a lasting effect on my own mental health.
For some reason, I’m rarely triggered by reading about things I’ve experienced. I’m more likely to find them cathartic.
