A Willful Woman…

Thoughts about books from a romance addict.

Hey Hey Heyer!

on December 15, 2015

I wrote about Georgette Heyer books that I don’t think get enough love for the Book Binge’s “Five Books Everyone Should Read”  series.

I love that you included Heyer’s detective novels in your list — they are some of my favourites of hers! I particularly love the opening scene in No Wind of Blame, with Mary and Aunt Ermyntrude, whose flowing sleeves of her negligee drape through butter dishes and cups of coffee…and who won’t put on a corset, until ‘fortified by breakfast’ – it totally sets the whole tone of the novel (and makes me crave toast soldiers with melted butter…!)

    🙂

    What’s a toast soldier?

I believe it’s toast cut into strips? My best friend when I was an adolescent was born in England, and her mom used to make us soft-boiled eggs in egg cups with cut up toast strips. Best thing ever! I mentioned this on twitter and I think Ros identified that as toast soldiers.

Got something to say?

Miss Bates Reads Romance

Miss Bates is Austen's loquacious spinster in Emma. No doubt Miss Bates read romances ... here's what she would've thought of them.
