“Miss Bates…had never boasted either beauty or cleverness. Her youth had passed without distinction, and her middle of life was devoted to the care of a failing mother, and the endeavour to make a small income go as far as possible. And yet she was a happy woman..." Emma, Jane Austen
Yes. I have noted the heroes who read romance fiction trend. But not the Paul trend. Is it like the Australian dislike for the name Paul??? Because I have a son named Paul who does not appreciate the song Jimmy Recard.
I don’t think we have any particular dislike for the name Paul in the states, though I did have a friend who went by Paul for a long time, and then went back to his first name William. (Perhaps it was a trip to Australia?!) Anyway, the “not named Paul was a reference to _Cold Cereal_, which I’m reading to my daughter. A kid tells people the P in his name stands for Paul. It is very hilariously something else.
Oooh! That sounds like a great rec! Thank you!
The opening lines of Jimmy Recard are these:
Let’s take it back to 1982 just quickly
I came into this world, and my Ma’ thought
I’ma name this little boy Paul
Plain old boring old Paul
And I always thought
If I had a different name, would my life be different?
Every time Paul introduces himself, it is inevitable someone will say “Plain old boring old Paul”. LOL.
Oh my! Australia always seems like such a fun place. 🙂
